What we wear does not only influence how others see us. It also affects how we experience ourselves.
There are moments in life when we quietly outgrow the version of ourselves the world has become familiar with. Not because we are pretending to be someone else. But because something within us has evolved.
Our knowledge deepens. Our voice strengthens. Our experience expands. And yet… our image sometimes remains behind, holding onto an older identity long after we have grown beyond it. This is one of the hidden tensions many professionals carry without fully realising it. They have the expertise. The wisdom. The capability. But their image still whispers hesitation where their presence is ready to speak with clarity.
The hidden cost of the dressing below your level of expertise happens does not happen because people consciously choose to understate themselves. In fact, it often begins as self-protection. A desire not to appear arrogant. Not to take up too much space. Not to be judged. Not to seem “too much.” So over time, visibility becomes softened. Brilliance becomes muted. Presence becomes diluted. Authority becomes apologetic.
Sometimes this looks like continually dressing in ways that feel overly safe, overly casual, or disconnected from the level of leadership already being embodied internally. And often, because this happens gradually, it can feel normal. Until one day there is a quiet realisation: “I no longer look like the person I am becoming.”
Long before we speak, people are already receiving information. Image communicates. Not in a superficial sense, but in a deeply human one. We instinctively read visual cues to understand confidence, credibility, energy, attention to self, and professional presence. This happens within moments of interaction, often before a conversation has fully begun.
Your image will never replace your expertise. But it can either support it… or quietly contradict it. When someone’s external presentation feels misaligned with the depth of their experience, there can be an invisible friction. Others may underestimate them. Interrupt them. Overlook them. Question their authority unconsciously. And perhaps most importantly, they may begin doing this to themselves.
What we wear does not only influence how others see us. It also affects how we experience ourselves.
There is a profound psychological shift that occurs when our outer image begins to reflect our internal growth. We carry ourselves differently. We make decisions differently. We speak with greater conviction. We stop negotiating with our own worth.
This is not about performance. Nor is it about becoming polished for approval. It is about congruence. When your image aligns with your essence, your expertise, and the season you are stepping into, something settles internally. You no longer feel the need to shrink in rooms you have already earned the right to occupy.
Many people wait until they feel fully confident before allowing themselves to be seen differently. But confidence rarely arrives first. Often, visibility comes before certainty. The truth is, your image can become a bridge between who you have been and who you are growing into. Not by creating a false version of yourself. But by honouring the truth of your evolution.
The most powerful professional presence is not created through trends or performance. It emerges when someone fully inhabits themselves. When their appearance reflects the calibre of their thinking.
The depth of their experience. The future they are already stepping towards.
Because dressing below your expertise does not make you more humble. Sometimes, it simply makes you less visible. And you were never designed to disappear within your own life.
In the featured photo above you can see three women who had been paying the hidden cost of dressing below their level of expertise in their before photos. Before they align their image with their expertise you can see generic, inconsequential outfits and personas. The after pics show the influence and impact dressing for your level of expertise can make in an instant!
Alpa is a 31 year old finance executive looking for promotion to Finance Director. She was dressing like many people do for work choosing smart black trousers and black and white top. What level of authority does that look have? Certainly not that of an executive director. Why? Even though she has dark hair the black trousers actually and visual weight as does he long un-layered hair draped to the front. Her grooming, make-up and accessories lack professional polish.
The after photo shows an outfit that aligns with her features, personality, body-shape and proportions, and lighter complexion. The tailored jackets gives structure which adds an air of authority. She succeeded in securing the role of Finance Director and now felt that she was being treated with the level of respect level with the role.
A Freelance Graphic Designer had lost her sense of style after bringing up her two sons. You can see in her before photo there is some effort to co-ordinate the colours in her top however there is no sense of essence or personality.
After her alignment even the subtle circular pattern in her jacket complements her naturally curly hair. She looks like an entrepreneur and the boss of her own business.
An MBA graduate Misty is seeking a new role with a marketing agency. Moving from her student casual dressing you see in the before photo Misty actually goes to her interview and secures the marketing executive role wearing that red suit. The colour and style show her level of bold creativity, attracts the right attention whilst red can be a tricky choice the tailoring and structure of the skirt suit lends itself to power, inspiration and gusto. Letting her young ambition and ability shine through.
Research into “enclothed cognition” suggests that what we wear can influence not only how others perceive us, but also our own confidence, focus, and behaviour. The suggested articles below provide some interesting insights.
